How I Built a Remote Career Without Any Tech Skills

What if losing your dream job during the pandemic could lead to a more fulfilling lifestyle you never thought possible?

That's exactly what happened to my recent guest on the Digital Nomad Nation podcast, who transformed from a hotel manager to a professional mermaid and digital nomad. Her journey shows that you don't need coding skills or a tech background to create a location-independent lifestyle.

"I was working in the hotel industry... that's what I took when I was in college. So I had a degree and that's what I know because that's also what I love doing. I love meeting people every day, just having daily conversations about other people's experiences."

From Corporate to Remote Freedom

Sarah was climbing the corporate ladder in hotel management, working in Napa Valley and loving the daily interactions with guests. She never imagined herself working remotely or traveling while working. But when the pandemic hit and she lost her job, she had to pivot.
"When I lost my job during pandemic, I decided to go back to the Philippines. And that's where I discovered online work." - Sarah Ifurung, Digital Nomad Nation Podcast

Instead of seeing this career setback as a dead end, Sarah used this time to educate herself. She began with what she already knew - customer service - and gradually built skills in digital marketing, social media, and podcast management.

Starting With What You Know

"I thought all I know, I didn't have any tech skills. I hate tech. So what do I know that I can use to earn money while I'm at home stuck?" - Sarah Ifurung

Many aspiring digital nomads believe they need specialized tech skills to work remotely. Sarah's experience proves this isn't true. She started with customer service roles, then gradually expanded her skill set by taking online courses in digital marketing, social media management, and other areas.

Finding Your “Why” for Travel

What's fascinating about Sarah's story is how she discovered freediving during the pandemic, which became her gateway to travel and ultimately her digital nomad lifestyle.

"I started freediving 2021... during the height of the pandemic, I wanted to learn something and also do something for the time that I have. So I tried freediving. I was a non-swimmer so I can't really swim, panic swimmer. Then dove into freediving. I learned it. I loved it. I got obsessed with it." - Sarah Ifurung

This passion eventually led her to travel solo through the Philippines and beyond, meeting other digital nomads, and even taking a job as a professional mermaid performer in India. The most successful digital nomads often find ways to integrate their passions with their work. For Sarah, her freediving skills opened doors to unique opportunities.

Practical Tips for Starting Your Digital Nomad Journey

Embrace Slow Travel

One of Sarah's top recommendations for sustainable nomad life is slow travel:
"One thing I do for me to be able to still manage my finances well, is to travel slowly, like really embrace slow traveling. And I personally love slow traveling because I just don't want to move around a lot." - Sarah Ifurung

Slow travel not only saves money on accommodation and transportation, but it also gives you time to establish routines, find your favorite coffee shops, and actually get work done while exploring new places.

Don't Wait Until You're Not Scared

If you're hesitating because of fear, Sarah's advice might be exactly what you need to hear:

"I still travel scared... I've already accepted that it's part of the journey, it's part of where I find like a random thing. It's just part of the adventure, getting lost, feeling really scared but know that when you try solo traveling you actually discover that you become more of a problem solver and you become more self-sufficient." - Sarah Ifurung
