Bansko: The Hidden European Town Saving Digital Nomads Thousands

Are you tired of watching your money disappear on basic living expenses?

In a recent Digital Nomad Nation podcast episode with Becky Bottjer, co-founder of Altspace Coworking in Bansko, Bulgaria, I discovered why this mountain town has become a digital nomad hotspot.

Rent under $500 Still Exists

"Let's take maybe rent, for example. So to live in a two bedroom apartment in the UK, you're probably looking at around a thousand, say a thousand euros a month. A two bedroom apartment here, maybe 400 euros a month," said Becky Bottjern

When I heard these numbers, I was honestly stunned. That's a 60% savings on housing alone! As someone who's constantly looking at ways to maximize freedom while minimizing costs, this immediately caught my attention. And it's not just about saving money—the quanity of apartments in Bansko makes it easy to find something last minute in the summer.

Utilities and Daily Expenses

"Water bills here are practically non-existent. Electricity, if you are careful about what you put in and you're not using that radiator that was installed 18 years ago in the apartment, you know, you're kind of a bit savvy with it. It is just so much cheaper," said Becky Bottjer

I've lived in places where my utility bills nearly matched my rent (American winter). What Becky described is a relief for those of us who want to keep our fixed costs predictable. When your monthly expenses are significantly lower, you gain incredible freedom—whether that means working fewer hours, saving for bigger adventures, or investing in your business.

Weather and Lifestyle Benefits

"Here not only does it have a sun, but it also has amazing winters. You've got these great summers, I think it was minus maybe a couple of months ago, minus 15 in the town. And then in the summer we can see 35 degrees," said Becky Bottjer

As someone who escaped the cold winters of the eastern United States, I completely relate to Becky's enthusiasm about the weather. Bansko offers that rare combination of four distinct seasons, which means you can enjoy skiing in winter, hiking in summer, and everything in between. For digital nomads from places like the UK or Pacific Northwest, having reliable sunshine can be a substantial quality-of-life upgrade.

Activities and Entertainment

"Whereas here you are outside most of the time. In the winter, even if you like your snow sports, you're out on the mountain or in the summer you are hiking. So there just seems to be so much more to do," said Becky Bottjer

One of my biggest discoveries as a digital nomad is that entertainment doesn't have to be expensive. In many Western countries, socializing often revolves around costly activities like dining out or tickets to events.

What Becky highlights about Bansko is that nature becomes your playground—free or low-cost activities abound when you have mountains, trails, and outdoor spaces at your doorstep.

Is Bansko Right For You?

After speaking with Becky, I'm convinced that Bansko offers one of the best value propositions for digital nomads in Europe. The combination of affordable housing, low daily expenses, four-season activities, and a growing nomad community makes it an ideal base.

While it might not have the beaches of Bali or the metropolitan buzz of Barcelona, Bansko offers something increasingly rare: a high quality of life at a price that allows true financial freedom. For remote workers looking to stretch their income, save more, or simply live well without constant financial pressure, this Bulgarian mountain town deserves a spot at the top of your list.
