How Volunteering Can Fund Your Travel Dreams (Even If You Have Little Saved)

Ever wonder how some digital nomads travel for months without draining their bank accounts?

When I sat down with Juliana Saavedra on the Digital Nomad Nation Podcast, she revealed a strategy that transformed her life from Colombian corporate burnout to global freedom - and it didn't require a massive savings account.

What really resonated with me about Juliana's story was her refusal to wait for the "perfect time" or "perfect partner" to begin her adventures. I've seen this hesitation hold back so many potential nomads who keep postponing their dreams.

The Breaking Point That Started Her Journey

"I was working in the company from seven in the morning to five, but at the end of the day, I was also working in my own company" - Juliana Saavedra, Digital Nomad Nation Podcast.

She described how she worked as a wedding planner on weekends too, essentially packing her schedule with work nearly every waking hour. I hear similar stories from many aspiring digital nomads who feel trapped in demanding careers.

For Juliana, this relentless schedule eventually caught up with her physically. After developing two tumors that required surgery, she realized something needed to change. Instead of continuing down the same path, she made a bold decision to leave Colombia without knowing exactly what would come next.

The Volunteer Strategy That Changed Everything

"My biggest advice for this is volunteering. You can help someone else, get accommodation and food for free, and also have time to work on your things and travel around" - Juliana Saavedra

When I asked Juliana about her best money-saving trick as a digital nomad, her answer surprised me. I've met many digital nomads during my seven years of travel, but her approach stood out as particularly accessible.

By volunteering through platforms like World Packers, she created a foundation that allowed her to travel extensively through Europe before making her way to Asia.

The beauty of this approach is that you don't need to be wealthy or have years of specialized skills. You simply contribute a few hours daily in exchange for accommodation and meals, which are typically your biggest travel expenses. This creates space to either save money or develop remote income streams while traveling.

From Volunteer to Full-Time Digital Nomad

"When I was in Turkey, my community started growing so fast. I was volunteering from seven to twelve. Then I was jumping into the water, having free time for writing. And during the night, I was working, having meetings, talking with my community" - Juliana Saavedra

What fascinated me about Juliana's journey was how volunteering became a bridge to her current digital nomad business. While volunteering across Europe, she began sharing her experiences on social media. To her surprise, a community of Latin American women began following her journey, eager to learn how they could do the same.

This organic growth created business opportunities for Juliana. She now offers coaching sessions, digital courses, and group trips to her audience of aspiring Latin American travelers. Her story illustrates how starting with volunteering can lead to discovering unexpected business opportunities along the way.

Finding Balance in the Nomadic Life

"We also get tired of traveling. I have been living this in the last couple months. I need to stay in one place at least for a month, to settle down and feel connected with myself again" - Juliana Saavedra

One thing I've learned in my own nomad journey is that constant movement eventually becomes exhausting. Juliana echoed this sentiment when we spoke, which is why she now uses Bali as her home base. This gives her both stability and freedom, a balance I've found crucial for sustainable nomad living as well.

She explained that having a home base allows her to create routines like making her own breakfast and going to the gym, while still having the freedom to explore nearby destinations or take trips to other countries. This approach prevents travel fatigue while still embracing the nomadic lifestyle.

The Unexpected Skill of the Digital Nomad

"It's to learn how to listen. To learn how to listen to my audience, to learn how to listen to myself also. How do you feel today? You feel like you need to go to the beach or you feel like you need this day to work?" - Juliana Saavedra

When I asked Juliana about the most valuable skill she's developed as a digital nomad, her answer wasn't technical or business-related. Instead, she highlighted self-awareness to her own needs. This creates the freedom to design each day according to what serves you best, rather than following a rigid structure imposed by others.

If you're dreaming of the digital nomad lifestyle but worried about finances, volunteering might be your perfect entry point. It combines cultural immersion with practical savings while giving you space to develop your remote income streams.
